Our History

The Diocese of Chandigarh, CNI was carved out of the Diocese of Amritsar in 1973. The Diocese of Amritsar was one of the constituting bodies at the time of formation of the Church of North India. The Rt. Revd. Gurbachan Singh who was elected and installed on 19th November, 1973 as a 1st Bishop and working of the Diocese began with the installation of the Bishop. The Diocese of Chandigarh comprises of all the Civil Districts of Punjab including the union territory i.e. Chandigarh except the Districit of Amritsar. The name of this Diocese is known as “The Diocese of Chandigarh”, because it happens to be the capital city of both Punjab and Haryana. But its headquater is in Ludhiana because it is centrally located for administrative purposes and which is also the only industrial districts of the Punjab. The Diocesan Office is situated near Christian Medical College & Hospital, Ludhiana.

We Come To Serve

You can become a part of the Diocese of Chandigarh congregation by filling up a membership request form available at the Church vestry.

Baptism of newborn children, children between the ages of 2 to 12 years of age and baptism of adults is facilitated by the Church. The Baptism of children is preceded by compulsory counseling sessions for the parents. These counseling sessions are provided by our Presbyter. The form for Baptism is available in the Church office.

The Baptism service is performed as per the order mentioned in the respective section of the “Book of Worship” of The Church of North India.

Marriage ceremonies are performed in the Church for members. Pre-marital counseling sessions for couples is compulsory prior to their marriage. These counseling sessions are facilitated by our Presbyter.

In case you belong to another Church requiring St. James’ Church for a marriage ceremony, a letter from your church Pastor will be required in order to confirm the Marriage ceremony in St. James’ Church.

As per the Constitution of The Church of North India, marriages are preceded with announcement of banns in all the Churches that come under the purview of The Church of North India. There are 3 instances of the announcement of banns wherein the congregations of all Churches are informed about the date of the upcoming marriage. These congregations are also advised to confirm in writing if there is any just reason why the couple should not get married. The form for Banns is available in the Church office

Diocese Of Chandigarh Church has a number of facilities that are available within the premises. These facilities are enlisted as follows:

The Church lawns can be used to host functions (Marriage, Birthday, Thanksgiving, Anniversary, Baptism and Confirmation). The Church lawns & adjoining common areas can accommodate approx 1200 people and approx 100 cars.
